The short answer
Knaresborough is a historic market town about 3 miles from Harrogate, around 10 minutes away by direct train. The best things to do in Knaresborough are to walk down to the River Nidd for the famous viaduct view, hire a rowing boat in the warmer months, explore the castle ruins and museum, visit Mother Shipton's Cave and its Petrifying Well, and browse the Wednesday market. It makes a perfect half day out from a Harrogate base.
Getting to Knaresborough from Harrogate
Trains run frequently through the day, and the journey takes around 10 minutes, so there's no need to drive or park. Knaresborough station is a short walk from the Market Place and the castle. By car it's about 15 minutes. If you'd rather walk or cycle, the Beryl Burton cycleway follows the Nidd Gorge between the two towns. Our guide to arriving in Harrogate by train covers the station end of the trip.
The viaduct and the River Nidd
The four-arched railway viaduct over the River Nidd is one of the most photographed views in Yorkshire. Some of the best angles are from the castle grounds above and from the riverside paths at Waterside below. In spring and summer you can hire a traditional rowing boat and row beneath the arches; Blenkhorn's Boats and Marigold Café and Boating both hire boats from the riverside. Boating depends on the season and the river, so check before you go.
Knaresborough Castle and museum
The castle ruins sit high above the gorge, with sweeping views up and down the river. Inside you'll find the King's Chambers, the dungeon and a Tudor courtroom museum, and you can book a Sallyport tour of the castle's hidden passage. According to Culture North Yorkshire, the castle and museum open Tuesday to Sunday, 9.30am to 4.30pm, from April to October, and Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 3.30pm, from November to March. Tickets are £4.40 for adults, £2.50 for children and £13 for a family. The grounds are open all year and are a lovely spot for a picnic.
Mother Shipton's Cave and the Petrifying Well
Mother Shipton's Cave describes itself as England's oldest visitor attraction, open since 1630. A riverside walk through ancient woodland leads to the cave where the prophetess Mother Shipton is said to have been born, and to the Petrifying Well, where mineral-rich water slowly turns everyday objects to stone. In 2026 it's open daily from 28 March to 1 November, with a family Halloween event from 24 October to 1 November and selected dates at Christmas. Dogs are welcome on a lead in most areas.
The market, the streets and the stories
- Wednesday market – held in the Market Place every Wednesday, 7.30am to 3pm.
- Ye Oldest Chymist Shoppe – believed to be England's oldest chemist's shop building, now home to the Lavender Tea Rooms.
- Blind Jack – look out for the statue of John Metcalf, the 18th-century road builder born in Knaresborough, on a bench in the Market Place.
- The Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag – a tiny wayside shrine carved into the cliff beside the river in the 15th century.
- The Old Manor House – easy to spot by its chessboard-painted walls, down by the river.
Walks around Knaresborough
The Nidd Gorge, a deep wooded ravine formed at the end of the last ice age, runs between Knaresborough and Harrogate. The Woodland Trust looks after much of it, and it's at its best for bluebells in spring and golden colour in autumn. For a longer day, a circular walk of around 7 miles around the gorge starts from Conyngham Hall. Riverside paths on both banks pass beneath the viaduct, and they're popular with dog walkers; see our dog-friendly Harrogate guide for more walks and pubs that welcome dogs.
Events worth planning around
- Knaresborough Christmas Market – Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December 2026, 10am to 5pm, with a firework finale over the viaduct and the Nidd Gorge as the weekend closes at 4.30pm on the Sunday.
- The Great Knaresborough Bed Race – held on the second Saturday of June, with teams racing decorated beds through town and across the River Nidd. The 2027 race is on Saturday 12 June.
- Halloween at Mother Shipton's – 24 October to 1 November 2026.
