The short answer
Harrogate is one of the best bases in Yorkshire for day trips. York is about half an hour away by direct train, Knaresborough is a short hop, and Fountains Abbey, Brimham Rocks and the Yorkshire Dales are all within roughly half an hour to an hour by car. Here are the trips our guests love most, with rough travel times from the centre of town.
York
Around 30–40 minutes by direct train. The easiest and most popular day out. Walk the city walls, see York Minster, wander the Shambles and finish with dinner before the train home. Trains run regularly from Harrogate station, a few minutes' walk from most of our homes, so there's no need to drive or park.
Knaresborough
Around 10 minutes by train, or 15 by car. Knaresborough's viaduct over the River Nidd is one of the most photographed views in Yorkshire. Hire a rowing boat, climb up to the castle ruins, browse the market on a Wednesday and see Mother Shipton's Cave. It's close enough for a half day, and a lovely combination with lunch in town.
Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal
Around 25–30 minutes by car. A UNESCO World Heritage Site cared for by the National Trust, with the largest monastic ruins in the country set within an 18th-century water garden and deer park. Allow at least half a day; the walk from the visitor centre through the water garden to the abbey is the highlight.
Brimham Rocks
Around 25 minutes by car. Huge, wind-carved gritstone formations on the moor above Nidderdale, with sweeping views and plenty of scrambling for children (and adults). It's free to walk, with National Trust parking, and at its best on a clear evening.
Ripley Castle and village
Around 15 minutes by car. A small estate village just north of Harrogate, with a castle that has been home to the same family for centuries, walled gardens, a deer park and a well-known ice cream shop. Easy to combine with Brimham Rocks or Fountains Abbey on the same day.
Nidderdale and Pateley Bridge
Around 30 minutes by car. Nidderdale National Landscape is quieter than the Dales but just as beautiful. Pateley Bridge has independent shops and cafés, and How Stean Gorge further up the valley offers walks through a limestone gorge.
Bolton Abbey and the Yorkshire Dales
Around 35–45 minutes by car. Riverside walks along the Wharfe past the priory ruins, the famous stepping stones and the Strid. Carry on to Grassington or Malham if you want a full Dales day, with classic limestone scenery and village pubs.
Leeds
Around 30–40 minutes by train. For shopping, galleries and a bigger night out. The Victoria Quarter arcades and Leeds Art Gallery are a short walk from the station.
Castle Howard
Around an hour by car. One of England's grandest stately homes, with formal gardens and lakes. A proper day out, and worth pairing with lunch in Malton on the way home.
Getting around
- By train: York, Leeds and Knaresborough are all on direct lines from Harrogate station.
- By car: Fountains Abbey, Brimham Rocks, Ripley, Nidderdale and the Dales are easiest by car. Several of our homes have parking; check each listing.
- Timing: National Trust sites are busiest on sunny weekends and school holidays, so arrive early or late in the day.
