The short answer

Autumn and early winter are some of Harrogate's busiest months. The highlights for October to December 2026 are:

  • the Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival (11–25 October)
  • Knit + Stitch at the Harrogate Convention Centre (19–22 November)
  • the Great Yorkshire Christmas Fair at the Great Yorkshire Events Centre (26–29 November)
  • Glow at RHS Harlow Carr (selected dates from 26 November to 30 December)
  • the Knaresborough Christmas Market (5–6 December)
  • the Harrogate Ice Pavilion in Valley Gardens (17 December to 3 January)

One thing has changed this year. The big Harrogate Christmas Fayre and the lights switch-on event are not running in 2026. The town has a new Christmas programme instead, with ice sculptures, an ice trail, curling and the covered rink.

Below is the month-by-month list we give our own guests. We've added the dates when rooms go fastest.

October 2026

October is the month we'd pick if we could only visit once. It's quieter than summer, the trees on the Stray turn gold, and the evenings get cosy.

  • 11–25 October: Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival. Two weeks of talks from well-known writers. Opening day speakers include Alexander McCall Smith and Ben Okri. Popular talks sell out, so book early.
  • Early October at the Royal Hall and Convention Centre. Shows include The Bootleg Beatles (3 October), Francis Rossi (4 October), John Simpson (10 October) and Miriam Margolyes (11 October).
  • 12 and 23 October: Royal Hall open days. A rare chance to look round one of the town's most beautiful buildings.
  • 24 October–1 November: Harrogate Indoor Funfair at the Great Yorkshire Events Centre. It covers the October half term.
  • 28 October: Swan Lake, performed by Imperial Classical Ballet.

Half term is a good week for families. Our guide Coming with Family: What Actually Works covers the days out that go down well with children.

November 2026

  • Early November: bonfire night. The Round Table's Stray Charity Bonfire is one of the biggest displays in the area. The 2026 date hadn't been confirmed when we wrote this (last year's was on a Saturday in early November), so check before you travel.
  • 14–15 November: Thought Bubble Comic Convention at the Harrogate Convention Centre.
  • 13–15 November: North of England Woodworking & Power Tool Show at the Great Yorkshire Events Centre.
  • 19–22 November: Knit + Stitch. This is one of the UK's biggest craft shows, with 150+ exhibitors and 200+ workshops. It's one of the busiest weekends of the year for accommodation in Harrogate.
  • 26–29 November: Great Yorkshire Christmas Fair, with around 180 exhibitors. It's a good place to start your Christmas shopping.
  • From 25 November: Sleeping Beauty, the Harrogate Theatre pantomime. It runs until 17 January.
  • From 26 November: Glow at RHS Harlow Carr. It's Glow's tenth year, with eight new light installations and the gardens' champion trees lit up for the first time. Tickets are timed and evening slots sell out, so book as soon as you know your dates.

December 2026 and Christmas in Harrogate

Harrogate's Christmas looks a little different in 2026. North Yorkshire Council has confirmed that the Harrogate Christmas Fayre, the big wheel and the lights switch-on event won't return this year. Here's what is happening instead:

  • 5–6 December: Little Bird Made Christmas Market in Valley Gardens, with local makers, food and gifts.
  • 5–6 December: Knaresborough Christmas Market. It's a ten-minute train ride away. There's a fireworks finale over the viaduct on Sunday 6 December at 4.30pm, and it gets very busy.
  • 12 December: ice sculptures and the Ice Trail in the town centre. Santa's Grotto and two curling lanes run on selected December dates.
  • 17 December–3 January: Harrogate Ice Pavilion. A covered ice rink in Valley Gardens, closed on Christmas Day.
  • 6 December: I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue live at the Royal Hall.

If you're coming for a Christmas break, see our guide to Harrogate at Christmas. It covers the quieter side of a festive break in town.

Coming for work? Conference and trade show dates

A lot of our autumn guests are in town for the Harrogate Convention Centre or the Great Yorkshire Events Centre. These are the dates to plan around:

  • 18–20 October: Harrogate International Nursery Fair (trade)
  • 30 October–1 November: LABBS 50th Anniversary Convention and the Northern Homebuilding & Renovating Show
  • 12 November: Rail Infrastructure Networking Event, Great Yorkshire Events Centre
  • 25–27 November: ASPiH Conference 2026
  • 10–13 January 2027: Harrogate Christmas & Gift Fair (trade). It's one of the busiest weeks of the whole year.

Our St James Apartments and Downtown Studios are a short walk from the station and the Convention Centre. They have fast Wi-Fi and weekly rates. Read more about business and corporate stays in Harrogate.

When to book: the busiest dates

Given the size of this season's events, these are the dates we expect to fill up fastest:

  • 18–20 October (Nursery Fair)
  • 30 October–1 November (half term weekend, plus two events at the Convention Centre)
  • 13–15 November and 19–22 November (the woodworking show, then Knit + Stitch)
  • 25–29 November (the conference, the Christmas Fair and the first Glow nights)
  • 5–6 December (Christmas market weekend)
  • Glow weekends in December

If you're travelling on those dates, book early. Booking direct on our website is usually the best-value way to stay, because you avoid the service fees some booking sites add. You can see every home and check live availability on Our Properties.

Not sure which home suits you? For families and groups, The Royal Hall Retreat and The Blossom Bay each sleep six. For couples and solo trips, browse our apartments and studios, or our townhouses if you would like a whole house to yourselves.
