The short answer

Dog-friendly Harrogate is easy to find: the 200-acre Stray is right in the middle of town, there are woodland walks at the Pinewoods and Hookstone Woods, the Nidd Gorge is a short drive away, and plenty of pubs and cafés welcome dogs. Add a comfortable home to come back to, and it's one of the best places in Yorkshire for a break with your dog. If you're bringing yours, message us before you book and we'll point you to a home that suits you both.

Dog-friendly Harrogate: the best walks

  • The Stray – 200 acres of open grass wrapping around the town centre, with plenty of room for a run. Keep dogs close near roads and during events. Our guide to the Stray has the best routes.
  • Valley Gardens – formal gardens, woodland paths and a café, perfect for a gentle stroll with dogs on leads. See Valley Gardens in every season.
  • The Pinewoods – carry on from the top of Valley Gardens into peaceful woodland with soft, sheltered paths, lovely on a breezy day.
  • Hookstone Woods – a quiet woodland near Hornbeam Park on the Pannal side of town, good in all weathers.
  • Nidd Gorge – ancient woodland along the River Nidd between Bilton and Knaresborough, with streams for paddling and some of the area's best views.
  • Knaresborough riverside – the paths around Conyngham Hall and along the Nidd are a favourite, with river access for dogs who love to swim.

One thing to know: RHS Garden Harlow Carr doesn't usually allow dogs (assistance dogs aside), apart from occasional after-hours "Walkies" evenings, so the Pinewoods next door is the better choice for a walk together.

Dog-friendly pubs in Harrogate and Knaresborough

Many of Harrogate's pubs are happy to see a well-behaved dog, often with a water bowl and a biscuit on the bar. Ones that have long welcomed dogs include:

  • The Harrogate Tap – in the old station building, ideal if you're arriving by train.
  • The Little Ale House – a cosy micropub on Cheltenham Crescent.
  • Major Tom's Social – relaxed, with music, tucked down The Ginnel.
  • The Fat Badger – a traditional pub on Cold Bath Road.
  • Cold Bath Brewing Co. – a microbrewery bar on King's Road.
  • Blind Jack's and The Mitre – two Knaresborough favourites, close to the river walks.

House rules can change, and some pubs keep dogs to the bar rather than the dining room, so it's always worth checking ahead. For more ideas, see our pick of the perfect pub in Harrogate.

Cafés and coffee stops

Several independent cafés around Montpellier and Oxford Street have outdoor tables and water bowls, and some welcome dogs inside too. Hoxton North on Royal Parade and Baltzersen's on Oxford Street are popular with dog owners. As with pubs, a quick check before you go saves any disappointment.

A dog-friendly day out

Knaresborough makes an easy half-day trip: a walk along the river, a look at the castle grounds above the viaduct and a pub lunch. Mother Shipton's Cave welcomes dogs on leads in much of its riverside park. For more ideas further afield, see our guide to the best day trips from Harrogate.

Tips for a stay with your dog

  • Bring your dog's own bed and a familiar blanket so they settle quickly.
  • Pack an old towel for muddy paws after the Stray or the Nidd Gorge.
  • Keep a lead handy: dogs need to be on leads in Valley Gardens and anywhere near livestock or roads.
  • Plan one big walk a day and leave time to explore the town together.

FAQ

Is Harrogate dog friendly?

Yes. Harrogate has the 200-acre Stray in the town centre, woodland walks at the Pinewoods and Hookstone Woods, and many pubs and cafés that welcome dogs. Knaresborough and the Nidd Gorge are close by for longer walks.

Where can I walk my dog off the lead in Harrogate?

Much of the Stray is open grassland where dogs can run, and Hookstone Woods and the Nidd Gorge have quieter paths too. Keep dogs on leads in Valley Gardens and near roads, livestock and events.

Are dogs allowed at RHS Harlow Carr?

Dogs aren't usually allowed at RHS Garden Harlow Carr, apart from assistance dogs and occasional after-hours 'Walkies' events. The Pinewoods next door is a lovely alternative for a woodland walk with your dog.

Can I bring my dog to a Short Stay Harrogate home?

Send us a message before you book and we'll let you know which of our homes suit you and your dog. Our homes are a short walk from the Stray and Valley Gardens.
