The short answer
RHS Harlow Carr is the Royal Horticultural Society's garden in Harrogate, around 58 acres of gardens, woodland and streamside planting about 1.5 miles from the town centre. In winter it opens every day from 9.30am to 4pm (last entry 3pm), and adult tickets start at £13.60 when booked online for a weekday. From 26 November to 30 December 2026, RHS Glow lights the garden up on selected evenings, one of the highlights of Christmas in Harrogate.
What to see at RHS Harlow Carr
Harlow Carr is a garden for every season, and it's a lovely, easy-going half day out. Highlights include:
- The Streamside Garden – a winding stream lined with bold, naturalistic planting, the garden's best-known view.
- The Winter Walk – colourful stems, scented shrubs and early bulbs that make the garden worth a visit even on a frosty morning.
- Woodland and wildflower areas – quiet paths that are perfect for a slow wander.
- The kitchen garden – ideas and inspiration for anyone who grows their own.
- Space for children – outdoor play areas and plenty of room to explore; family listings mention meeting the hedgehogs and the racing chickens.
The garden also has a library, a well-stocked garden centre and the shop, and it's popular with keen gardeners and families alike.
RHS Glow 2026 at Harlow Carr
RHS Glow transforms the garden with festive illuminations on selected evenings from 26 November to 30 December 2026. Visitors follow a lit trail through the borders, trees and water, and it's become one of the most popular things to do in Harrogate in the run-up to Christmas. The RHS says the most popular time slots always sell out, so book early on the RHS website, where you'll find the exact dates, times and prices. Harlow Carr has introduced off-peak Glow tickets this year, and RHS members pay less. For everything else on this winter, see our guide to Christmas in Harrogate 2026.

Getting there from Harrogate
The nicest way to arrive is on foot. The walk from the town centre is about 1.5 miles and takes around 45 minutes, through the Valley Gardens and up through the Pinewoods. Our guide to the Valley Gardens in every season covers the first part of the route. If you'd rather ride, the number 6 bus from Harrogate bus station, next to the railway station, takes around 15 minutes to the Harlow Grange stop on Otley Road, about 5 minutes' walk from the garden. There's a car park on site and plenty of space for bikes.
Tea and cake
Harlow Carr has its own Bettys Café Tea Rooms, so you can enjoy a Yorkshire tea and a Fat Rascal without heading back into town. It's busy at weekends and during Glow, so allow time or go early. If you're a Bettys fan, our piece on the quiet art of Bettys is worth a read.
Visiting with children and dogs
Harlow Carr is very family-friendly, with paths for buggies, open space to run around and, in December, the excitement of Glow. Our guide to visiting Harrogate with your family has more ideas. Dogs aren't normally allowed in the garden, apart from assistance dogs and occasional dog-friendly Walkies evenings, but the Valley Gardens and Pinewoods next door make a wonderful dog walk, and our dog-friendly Harrogate guide lists walks, pubs and places to stay that welcome four-legged guests.
Make a weekend of it
Harlow Carr sits on the Harlow Hill side of Harrogate, so it pairs perfectly with a stroll through the Valley Gardens, lunch in the Montpellier Quarter and an evening in town. Stay in one of our Harrogate homes and you'll have self check-in, a proper kitchen and space to relax after a day in the garden or a festive evening at Glow.
