What Jerusalem is and who goes

Jerusalem is Jez Butterworth's play about Johnny 'Rooster' Byron, who lives in a caravan in a Wiltshire wood and is about to be evicted. It is set on St George's Day. It first opened at London's Royal Court in 2009, with Mark Rylance in the lead role, and later transferred to the West End and Broadway. This production comes from Harrogate Dramatic Society, an amateur company, and is directed by Dermot Hill. It is presented by arrangement with Nick Hern Books. The society says it has a large cast and a built set that includes the caravan and woodland.

Dates and times

There are four performances at Harrogate Theatre, on Oxford Street:

Thursday 15 October, 7.30pm. Friday 16 October, 7.30pm. Saturday 17 October, 2.30pm matinee and 7.30pm evening.

Tickets are £20 each. The theatre box office is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, on 01423 502116.

For visitors

The show is open to the public. The theatre recommends it for ages 16 and over. It contains strong language throughout, references to drug use and off-stage violence, and the listing notes one use of loud music and flashing lights. The play is not suitable for children. A local newspaper preview gave the age guidance as 14 plus, so if you are unsure about a younger teenager, check with the box office first.

For wheelchair and companion bookings, contact the box office directly on 01423 502116. Tickets for the performances can be bought through the Harrogate Theatre website.

Getting to Harrogate

Harrogate station is about a 10-minute walk from the Convention Centre. LNER runs direct trains to London King's Cross roughly every hour. Leeds is about 35 minutes away by train. Leeds Bradford Airport is about 30 minutes away by taxi. The theatre is in the town centre, so if you stay centrally you can usually walk there without a car.

Booking

The run is only three days long and today is 12 October, so it is worth booking soon if you want a particular performance. The Saturday matinee may suit anyone who would rather not travel home late. If you plan to stay overnight, it is sensible to sort your accommodation at the same time as your tickets.

After the show

Harrogate has plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance of the theatre, and many of them take bookings for pre-theatre and post-show tables. If you are making a weekend of it, the Turkish Baths are a good way to spend the next morning.

We are a local family-run company with serviced apartments and townhouses across central Harrogate, many a short walk from the Convention Centre and the Royal Hall. A self-catering base can be handy if you are travelling in a group, as you can eat in or out and keep your own hours after a late curtain. If that suits you, have a look at what we have available for 15 to 17 October.
